You’re gonna recognize the look of things. …In a lot of ways that’s why this show is kind of just so unapologetically classic in a Star Wars sense ’cause we all want the fans to feel that this going to be off on the right foot. As Dave Filoni explained it in an interview with /Film: Set between Revenge of the Sith and the original Star Wars, but much closer to the latter, it gave the storytellers an excuse to really dig deep into nostalgia for the original films in a way that – for all the show’s strengths – The Clone Wars was never really able to do. That idea married with the franchise’s first real exploration into the formation of the Rebel Alliance laid the groundwork of what this show would become.

A sort of ragtag band of misfits operating out of a Millennium Falcon-type ship on the fringes of the galaxy, exploring a perspective on this universe that’s somewhat more grounded than the operatic grandeur of the main series of films. This new show shaped by Carrie Beck, Simon Kinberg, and the quite literal apprentice to George Lucas, Dave Filoni grew out of the original concept Filoni had for The Clone Wars. Episode VII logistically couldn’t be the formal reintroduction of Star Wars, so the task of setting expectations for the future and making clear the intent of Lucasfilm’s new direction fell to, of all things, another cartoon series: Star Wars Rebels.
The biggest thing, clearly, was the commitment to producing Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, but films on that scale take years of planning, shooting, and post-production work. Instead, I want to paint the picture of where the popular opinion of Star Wars was circa 2012 and the challenges both Disney and Lucasfilm had laid out before them if they wanted to bring the franchise back to life. On the one hand, Disney was purchasing the most financially lucrative entertainment brand outside of their own on the other, they were in a very real way inheriting damaged goods.Īnd I don’t say any of that as a slight to the prequels, The Clone Wars, or to any of their respective fans – my relationship with both has evolved quite a bit over time. Beyond that, the popular perception of the series was still colored by the widespread disappointment in the prequel movies – a negative cultural association nearly as pervasive as the positive reception to the original film. George Lucas had publicly committed to not doing any more films and the only outlet for new storytelling of any real legitimacy to happen was in the well-liked, but still somewhat niche The Clone Wars cartoon. The most popular multi-media franchise of all time up to that point had basically ended. She appears in “Star Wars: Rebels” at multiple points, becoming a main character in season 2 and playing a massive role in the finale. She first appeared under the codename “Fulcrum” before revealing herself to be Ahsoka Tano. She appeared in “Star Wars: Rebels,” an animated show that ran from 2014 to 2018. We already knew Ahsoka survived Order 66, though. She escapes in the end, heading off into parts unknown. After it ends, Ahsoka is attacked by clone troopers because of Order 66 - which led to the Great Jedi Purge.
The series’ final arc featured Ahsoka Tano leading the Siege of Mandalore, a battle between the Darth Maul’s Mandalorian army and the Republic. “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” released its series finale Monday morning, putting an end to the story of the Clone Wars and its hero, Ahsoka Tano.Īhsoka - a character created for “Clone Wars” - was the apprentice of Anakin Skywalker before he became Darth Vader.
